Librarians as Leaders of 21st Century Learning

As Thanksgiving arrives, I grow a little more corny. I am planning a blog post about those things I am grateful for in my work. What are you thankful for? In terms of collection, what have you seen that truly rocks? What really works in your facility? For your practice?

I am grateful for the budding optimism in our country in the past week. I hope we can move forward with a more positive outlook as a country.

I am grateful for a profession that allows me to interact with so many interesting people. Like all librarians, I learn something new every day which is one of the best things about being a librarian.

I am thankful to have a little hope for the 1st Amendment and all those others too. Maybe we can dust off our rights and start using them again.

I am thankful for the opportunity to gather, talk, agree, disagree and learn with people who value Intellectual Freedom. It is a gift that we are still able to do that in a time when the economy is in danger and many fear the ideas and conversations.

I am thankful for the wide variety and large collection of materials that are available for reading along with the multiple formats that one may select from (as they become available) as well. The other day, I was able to read one item in print, online, on my Kindle, or listen to it as an audiobook! This is fantastic for reaching multiple types of learners and readers!

I am thankful for a job I love so much, I'm actually impatient for long vacations to be over. (I know, that's sort of warped...) I am thankful I work in a school that appreciates and values both me and the work I do. Like Mary Ann, I am intensely grateful for the over-whelming hope generated by the election, and the promise to restore to America its values and beliefs, which we seem to have mislaid the the past 8 years.

Like Mary Ann, I am grateful for a profession that forces me to be a lifelong learner. "May you live in interesting times" is not such a curse, after all!

I am in Jeri's camp, "I am thankful I work in a school that appreciates and values both me and the work I do." I feel so lucky to have wonderful students, admin and parent support...let's keep the fingers crossed and optimism high for a better economy so we all still have our jobs next year.

I am very grateful to be a part of this fantastic profession where learning never ends, and for my colleagues who understand and appreciate the job that I do.

I am thankful for my admin that supports me when I want to try out new things, visit other schools, or attend PD opportunities. She recognizes that I have a different need for learning, and must sometimes go outside my building to get it. But she also knows I will bring back and give back to my school community.

I am grateful for my school family. Our staff is a very close group that works well together. We collaborate. We try new things. We value the contributions of others. It is the perfect culture for a library media program to grow and develop. I'm very lucky to be a part of such a great family.

I am so thankful for variety of materials we have at our fingertips. In so many other countries around the world to have one book is a thrill and we have the benefit of millions of books via interlibrary loan and free school and public libraries.

I'm thankful that my administration values the library and allows experimentation with new resources and technologies knowing that not all will be successful on the first try. I am also thankful that censorship has not been an issue to this point. Teens have access to a wide variety of ficiton to meet their reading preferences.

I am thankful to be a part of a greater profession, peopled by so many who have sincere interests in sharing what we have with others.
